【Latest Research in Nature Medicine: Advancing Precision Medicine for Chinese Populations】 We are excited to share that our research paper, “Population-scale genomic medicine with the Hong Kong Genome Project”, has been published in Nature Medicine. The study's significance was highlighted by the Nature Medicine Editorial Team:   “This study, which includes data from the first 20,000 participants sequenced through the HKGP, provides initial insights on the actionable impact of genomic medicine in Hong Kong, and it introduces a blueprint for establishing precision medicine initiatives.”    The study has also received international recognition. Professor Zornitza Stark, Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI), Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, opined:    “Although many national genomic projects publish ambitious plans, manuscripts describing results are few and far between. The HKGP is to be commended on the breadth and quality of the analysis. Undoubtedly, the project will contribute significantly to evidence generation and capacity building in Hong Kong, as well as make a major contribution globally.” Key impact highlights:   🔬 Applying European-based reference standards would have omitted 38 clinically important genes, under-recognised SCN5A and DSG2 enrichment, and highlighted differences in pharmacogenomic allele frequencies relevant to local prescribing.   🧬 A 25% diagnostic yield, 31% novel pathogenic variant rate, and identification of complex variants often missed by targeted approaches highlight the clinical value of whole-genome sequencing.   💊 Among diagnosed patients, 88% experienced potential changes in clinical management; approximately 900,000 prescriptions annually in Hong Kong could benefit from pharmacogenomic-informed prescribing; and expanded carrier screening increased detection rates from 48% to 65%.   🔎The findings underscore the importance of population-specific genomic resources to support equitable and accurate precision medicine.   Looking ahead to 2030, HKGI aims to reach 100,000 – 120,000 genomes, deepening ultra-rare variant discovery, refining PRS for Chinese populations, and integrating precision medicine into routine care.   We extend our sincere gratitude to all participants, collaborators, partnering centres and multidisciplinary teams who made this publication possible. 🙏   📝Read research briefing: https://lnkd.in/e-VsqpcS 📄Read the full paper: https://lnkd.in/gub8fXX4 {hashtag|\#|HKGI} {hashtag|\#|HKGP} {hashtag|\#|GenomeProject} {hashtag|\#|PrecisionMedicine} {hashtag|\#|GenomicMedicine} {hashtag|\#|NatureMedicine} {hashtag|\#|ScientificResearch}
