Senior Research Officer (Genome Curation)

Reporting to the Lead Scientist II (Genome Diagnostics and Precision Health), the incumbent will assume the following responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the deputy to the Lead Scientist, overseeing and coordinating daily operations of the genome curation team
  • Supervise genome curation activities and perform independent verification of genome curation analysis results, ensuring alignment with the latest international standards and practices
  • Conduct advanced analysis of various genomic data, including whole genome sequencing (WGS) and next-generation sequencing (NGS), as well as omics data, to identify clinical trends and correlations
  • Assist the Lead Scientist in the practical implementation and optimisation of curation workflows, including the development and deployment of automation tools and analysis pipelines for variant prioritisation, curation and reporting
  • Mentor and train junior staff in genome curation methodologies, including variant filtering and classification
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, facilitating effective communication between clinicians, bioinformaticians, and laboratory scientists
  • Prepare and present findings in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, effectively communicating complex genomic data insights to diverse stakeholders
  • Engage in research and development activities, contributing to publications and presentations in peer-reviewed journals
  • Support project management by coordinating tasks, setting priorities, and ensuring efficient execution of genome curation projects
  • Provide technical expertise and support to the laboratory accreditation processes
  • Perform any other duties assigned by senior officers 

Requirements

  • A master's degree or above in biomedical sciences, genomics, bioinformatics or related disciplines
  • At least 5 years of working experience in genomic research or a related area, with a strong emphasis on genome curation and data analysis
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics tools and programming languages (Python, R) for data manipulation and analysis
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail for complex data interpretation and quality control
  • Preferably experience in genome research resulting in publications in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Preferably with working experience in a multi-disciplinary team consisting of clinicians, bioinformaticians and laboratory scientists
  • Good written Chinese and English, and fluency in spoken Cantonese; strong written English is an advantage
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory accreditation standards is an advantage
  • Good communication skills and great team mindset

Remuneration:

Successful candidate will be offered attractive remuneration and be appointed on an initial two-year contract (subject to mutual agreement for contract renewal).
