The HKGI Graduate Internship Programme offers fresh graduates a career starting point in genomics and related fields within a competitive job market.  The programme bridges the transition from higher education to corporate operations through targeted technical and professional upskilling.  The valuable capabilities and hands-on experience gained through this programme will significantly enhance candidates’ long-term marketability, establishing a firm foundation for future hiring opportunities both in the Hong Kong Genome Institute and across the broader industry.

We are seeking passionate individuals eager to develop their careers in this rapidly evolving sector.  Successful candidates will be assigned to the Technology and Innovation Branch.

Technology and Innovation

(1) Graduate Intern (Data Engineering / Genomics Data Systems)

The Graduate Intern is expected to support preparatory research and prototype development for the next phase of the HKGI data warehouse modernisation.  He or she will explore AI-driven approaches for structured data access and documentation workflows, with a view to improving how analytical queries are defined, tested, and safely executed. 

Key responsibilities

  • Research and design AI-assisted query interfaces for structured analytics across existing warehouse schemas
  • Define and document agent roles, skills, and interaction workflows for controlled query execution
  • Develop clear documentation of schema boundaries and data access patterns, supporting safe and transparent analytics
  • Conduct prototype testing on small-scale datasets to evaluate the usability and reliability of structured query concepts
  • Prepare technical notes and practical recommendations for integrating these concepts into the broader data environment 

Requirements

  • Fresh graduates with a bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Data Science/Engineering or a relevant IT discipline
  • Basic experience with SQL and data systems (ClickHouse, MySQL, or similar)
  • Working knowledge of Python and REST API development
  • Strong communication skills for clear documentation and presentation
  • Final year students in the coming academic year would be considered on an exceptional basis

(2) Graduate Intern (IT Support)
 
The Graduate Intern is expected to support day-to-day IT operations and user support activities within HKGI.  He or she will gain hands-on experience in front-line IT support, system administration, and infrastructure maintenance, contributing to the stability and security of key IT services.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide front-line IT support via calls, Microsoft Teams, and email
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and basic network issues
  • Support Windows desktops, Microsoft 365, and peripheral devices
  • Assist in user account management and access control
  • Support employee onboarding/offboarding (account and device setup)
  • Assist in system updates, patching, and maintenance
  • Maintain IT inventory and update service desk records
  • Provide support for IT projects such as office expansion and data centre relocation, including coordination, setup, and implementation of desktop and infrastructure system relocation activities
  • Assist in basic cybersecurity and IT risk-related tasks

Requirements

  • Fresh graduates with a bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network, Security, or a related discipline
  • Basic knowledge of Windows, Microsoft 365
  • Responsible, willing to learn, and a good team player
  • Final year students in the coming academic year would be considered on an exceptional basis

Programme Duration

Successful candidates will receive three to six months of on-the-job training at the Hong Kong Genome Institute, with a monthly remuneration to be determined by the HKGI.  The internship period may be extended subject to HKGI operational requirements.
