The HKGI Graduate Internship Programme offers fresh graduates a career starting point in genomics and related fields within a competitive job market.  The programme bridges the transition from higher education to corporate operations through targeted technical and professional upskilling.  The valuable capabilities and hands-on experience gained through this programme will significantly enhance candidates’ long-term marketability, establishing a firm foundation for future hiring opportunities both in the Hong Kong Genome Institute and across the broader industry.

We are seeking passionate individuals eager to develop their careers in this rapidly evolving sector.  Successful candidates will be assigned to the Medical and Scientific Branch.

Medical and Scientific

(1) Graduate Intern (Medical Technologist Assistant)

The Graduate Intern is expected to develop hands-on experience in molecular diagnostics and research laboratory operations and support the operation of the laboratory of the Hong Kong Genome Institute.

Key responsibilities

  • Process and analyse clinical specimens using molecular testing methods following established standard operating procedures
  • Assist in the handling and processing of patient samples, including whole blood, buccal swab, saliva, tumour and normal tissue specimens
  • Support DNA and RNA extraction from a variety of clinical tissue samples
  • Perform quality control assessments of extracted DNA and RNA
  • Perform routine laboratory operations, equipment maintenance and calibration
  • Support the implementation of quality control, documentation, internal audit and external quality assurance programmes to meet the accreditation standard

Requirements

  • Fresh graduates with a bachelor’s degree or above in science or relevant in medical laboratory sciences, biochemistry, biology or a related discipline
  • Prior relevant laboratory training and experience working in a genetic research laboratory or medical laboratory with the provision of genetic testing will be an advantage
  • Candidates who have applied for and awaiting registration (MLT Part II) with the Medical Laboratory Technologists Board, Hong Kong (MLT Board) will be an advantage
  • Detail-minded with a strong commitment to accuracy and quality, and team-oriented, able to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Final year students in the coming academic year would be considered on an exceptional basis

(2) Graduate Intern (Bioinformatics / Health Informatics)

The Graduate Intern is expected to support bioinformatics operations of the Hong Kong Genome Project.  He or she will be given the opportunity to gain practical experience in bioinformatics tools, databases, and workflows while contributing to the enhancement of genomic data processing operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Test and evaluate the performance of bioinformatics tools considered for integration into HKGI’s genomic data processing workflows
  • Investigate and summarise publicly available bioinformatics databases, comparing and aligning them with HKGI’s internal data resources to identify opportunities for optimisation or enhancement
  • Assist in genomic data curation and preparation to support internal analysis and external data requests
  • Handle ad-hoc data analysis requests from internal units and provide timely support for operational needs

Requirements

  • Fresh graduates with a bachelor’s degree or above in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Science, Computer/Data science or a related discipline
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R) and interested in learning data handling and analysis for biological datasets
  • Familiarity with genomic data analysis, sequencing workflows, or relevant bioinformatics tools is an advantage
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, effective communication skills, and a good team player in a fast-paced setting
  • Final year students in the coming academic year would be considered on an exceptional basis

Programme Duration

Successful candidates will receive three to six months of on-the-job training at the Hong Kong Genome Institute, with a monthly remuneration to be determined by the HKGI.  The internship period may be extended subject to HKGI operational requirements.
