HKGI recently held a media briefing to highlight the transformative impact of genomic medicine in diagnosis, treatment and disease prevention.

At the briefing, HKGI’s Chief Medical and Scientific Officer, Dr Brian Chung, shared the latest progress of the Hong Kong Genome Project. Since its full launch in 2021, more than 52,000 participants have been recruited, exceeding initial targets. He also presented a patient case in which a previously unreported disease‑causing variant was identified through international collaboration.

Dr Becky Ma and Dr Derek Lee also spoke at the briefing, illustrating how genomic medicine is advancing the diagnosis and treatment of kidney and heart diseases. They are awardees of the Research Excellence Grants and Overseas Training Scholarship, co‑organised annually with the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and the Hong Kong College of Physicians, respectively.

To further promote genomic medicine, HKGI is organising the International Genomic Medicine Symposium at Hong Kong Science Park on 17 November 2025, in partnership with Rare Diseases International (RDI) and the RDI‑Lancet Commission on Rare Diseases. The symposium will convene international experts to discuss developments in genetics and genomics, artificial intelligence applications, cancer detection, molecular diagnostics and data management.
